After a police encounter
Somewhere safe?

You don’t have to decide what it all means right now. Preserve what you know first.
Write it down.
Record the date, approximate time, location, what was said, and what happened. Include names or shield numbers, vehicle numbers, and witnesses if you have them.
Separate what you remember directly from what someone else told you. It’s okay to be unsure.
Keep the originals.
Preserve photos, videos, messages, medical records, and receipts. Make a backup. Do not edit your only copy.
This website does not collect your story or accept evidence uploads.

If there was an arrest, force, injury, property loss, or a possible deadline, contact a lawyer or legal-services organization promptly. Some deadlines can be short.
